Pegagan Lor is a village in Kapetakan, Cirebon Regency, West Java, Indonesia. As one of the coastal villages in the northern region of Cirebon, it has its uniqueness in terms of culture, history, and the life of its people, which are still strong with traditional values.

Geographically, the location of this village on the coast allows most of its residents to earn a living as fishermen and pond farmers. The sea and its products are the mainstay of daily life. No wonder the atmosphere of this village still feels beautiful and natural, with a view of the sea and a vast expanse of ponds.
The History and Origins of Pegagan Lor
In the past, forests, swamps, and vacant land dominated the Pegagan Lor area. Over time, people began settling in the area, working as farmers and fishermen. People also recognize this village as one of the oldest villages that played an important role in the development of Cirebon’s coastal area
Religious and Historical Tourism: Tomb of Syarif Syam (Sheikh Magelung Sakti)
One of the historical places in Pegagan Lor is the Tomb of Syarif Syam or Sheikh Magelung Sakti. Syarif Sham is a prince from the Land of Sham known to have hair so long that it touches the ground. That’s why he got the title Sheikh Magelung.
In his story, Syarif Syam came to Cirebon to find a spiritual teacher, as shown in his dream, and the meeting brought him to Sunan Gunung Jati. Sunan Gunung Jati taught Syarif Syam through this process and gave him a new name, Prince Soka. Today, many people from the surrounding areas and outside the region visit his grave, one of the pilgrimage destinations in Pegagan Lor.
Pasar Wates, the center of economic activity in Pegagan Lor
Besides religious tourism, Pegagan Lor Village also has Wates Market, a center of local economic activities. The market is located on the border between Pegagan Lor and Dukuh Villages. Residents often shop there for necessities like fresh vegetables, fish, chicken, and traditional market snacks.
Even though it is simple, Wates Market is always crowded, especially in the morning. This market helps the residents of Pegagan Lor and nearby villages meet their daily needs. They don’t have to travel far to the city center.
Potential and Community Life
As a coastal village, Pegagan Lor holds great potential, especially in fisheries and pond farming. In addition to shrimp and fish, residents use the surrounding land to farm and raise livestock. The life of the people is still very thick with the culture of cooperation and hereditary traditions.
In addition, the natural beauty around the village is also an attraction in itself. The expanse of ponds, sunset views on the coast, and fresh air make it a perfect place to relax. Many people visit to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city.
