Pasar Caplek in Bode Lor Village: New Economic Potential Growing from Cultural Roots

Pasar Caplek, located in Bode Lor Village, Plumbon Subdistrict, Cirebon Regency, now comes with a new face that is more representative, neat, and comfortable. The inauguration of this market by the Regent of Cirebon, Drs. H. Imron, M.Ag on September 27, 2023, became an important symbol of the efforts of the local government and community to encourage local economic growth based on tradition and citizen participation. The revitalization process of Pasar Caplek involved close cooperation between the village government and local traders. Around 300 kiosks and los were built at their own expense, demonstrating the spirit of gotong royong in reviving this center of the people’s economy.

This revitalization not only touches on the physical aspects of the building, but also strengthens the village’s cultural identity. One of the unique icons of the market is the buffalo statue that stands proudly at the front of the market. This statue is not just a decoration, but a symbol of local history that illustrates the buffalo’s important role in clearing land in the Bode Lor area. The presence of this icon emphasizes that Pasar Caplek is not only a place for buying and selling, but also a living space that reflects the local values of the Cirebon community.

Regent Imron emphasized that this market revitalization aims to build a people’s economy. By providing easy access to stall ownership in the form of legal certificates for up to 20 years and a five-year installment scheme, traders now have legal security and more motivation to develop their businesses. The local government is also ready to facilitate the supply of staple foods such as rice from Bulog in order to maintain price stability and people’s purchasing power. This strategy is important in suppressing inflation at the local level and reducing the dependence of villagers on modern shopping centers.

The now well-organized Pasar Caplek is expected to become the community’s main shopping alternative, as well as attract visitors from outside the village. The village government is encouraged to be more active in promoting this market through social media, so that the local potential offered can be widely recognized. In addition to selling basic necessities, this market can also become a center for MSME activities, traditional culinary, and local handicrafts that will add to its economic attractiveness. Even so, the process of moving from the old location to the new market faced challenges. Some traders chose to stay in temporary locations such as Karangsari due to fears of losing customers. However, over time, the synergy between market managers, village governments, and traders is expected to unify the flow of transactions to one main point: The renovated Pasar Caplek.
