The Meaning of “Toa Baja”
During my visit to Toa Baja, a popular local Cirebon coffee shop (Plumbon branch), I interviewed waitress Dita Ayu. Despite not being a coffee drinker (opting for orange juice), I was curious about the name’s origin. Dita explained “Toa” references the owner’s love for cockatoo birds, while “Baja” refers to their popular stir-fried kwetiaw cooked on a steel stove.
Development of Toa Baja in Cirebon
“The development of Toa Baja from the beginning of its establishment in 2019 only had a few employees until in 2024 now Toa Baja has many employees and the comparison is quite significant than the previous year.” Dita explained that Toa Baja’s customer base has grown and expanded steadily over the years. This is because the restaurant has gained recognition from a wider audience. In terms of the menu, Toa Baja has actively increased the variety and improved the quality of their offerings since their opening. They now boast a wider selection, ranging from local favorites to international dishes.
Toa Baja is a coffee shop with the concept of a modern local restaurant, where there are various menu variants in it. Among the many menus available at the restaurant, Toa Baja also has the best-selling menu or best seller menu which is used as a favorite menu by many consumers, one of which is fried kweitiau. Then for the rice bowl variant, Toa Baja has a best seller menu in Vietnamese Rice and Sambal Matah Rice. For the beverage variant, Toa Baja has a best seller menu in Es Toa Aren and Sijagat Coffee.

The Unique Things That Only in Toa Baja
One thing I really want to know about this coffee shop with a restaurant concept is about its uniqueness. The uniqueness that may be the main attraction for consumers so that Toa Baja continues to grow until now. And sure enough, Dita explained some of the uniqueness that Toa Baja has but is not owned by other coffee shops. According to Dita’s explanation that “the uniqueness of Toa Baja lies in its food menu where the food menu comes from various domestic and foreign regions such as Lombok Rice, Vietnamese Rice Bowl, Thai Rice, Korean Rice, and Japanese Ramen. The menu can only be obtaining at Toa Baja at a fairly affordable price.”
The growing consumer culture in Cirebon City and Regency has led to a surge in coffee shops and restaurants. These establishments have transcended their original purpose and are now seen as a secondary necessity by the community. This trend has fueled the opening of numerous coffee shops, both local and international brands, across Cirebon.With so many coffee shops in Cirebon, the positive side is that there are more jobs available. As a consumptive citizen and appreciation of our own city, it would be better if we support local businesses.
