The Cultural Heritage of West Java : Sega Jamblang

When visited a city, is it impossible to not try the city’s traditional food. Cirebon city has unique culture from the history, foods, or social culture. One of unique food from Cirebon is Sega Jamblang. ‘Sega’ means rice and ‘Jamblang’ means the place where this food come from. It is a one of famous traditional food from Cirebon, specifically in Cirebon Regency. Even though the name is same with a plant, but this food has not related with the plant. The dishes became a favorite food local because the price is cheap enough and can be found in various places. In 2023, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia, designated this food as one of Cultural Heritage in West Java.

The one that made this dishes unique is the use of jati leaves for wrapped the rice and make people curious about the food. Currently, it can be found easily in various places in Cirebon. There are many restaurants that have been around for a long time and have been passed down from generation to generation. In some restaurant, the dishes not use the jati leaves and use paper instead. Jati leaves are supplied from the Cirebon area and surrounding areas. Such as Majalengka, Indramayu, and Kuningan.

History Of Sega Jamblang

Initially, Sega Jamblang was the food of forced laborers during the colonial era. It happened in 1847, when there was a construction of Gempol Sugar Factory. At that time, workers found it difficult to find food for breakfast before going to work. That’s why the workers bring rice wrapped in jati leaves. The reason is because jati leaves are believed to make the rice in it not easily stale.

Menu of Sega Jamblang

Sega Jamblang has many side dishes in it. There are fried chilli sauce, perkedel made from boiled potatoes then mashed and shaped into rounds, stew of lung/meat/liver, fried scrambled egg, salted fish, stew chilli fish, vegetables, satay of potatoes, tofu stew, fried tempe, black squid, etc. The unit price for the sega jamblang side dish is very cheap. The price is from Rp1000 until Rp5000/item. Buyers can freely choose the desired side dishes for it, so the price is still cheap in 1 portion.
