Karyamulya Cultural Village: Creative Space and Traditions of the Cirebon Community

RW 11 Mekarmulya in Karyamulya has been officially designated as a Characterful Arts and Culture Village by the Cirebon City Government since July 2, 2022. This place has become a center for cultural arts performances such as mask dances, batik crafts, glass paintings, mask making, and a platform for the creativity of young generations to preserve ancestral heritage and drive the local creative economy. In addition to regular performances, Karyamulya also hosts the Full Moon Arts & Culture Festival at the sub-district field—a launch of a program that strengthens local traditional arts.

Because its location is in Cirebon, several distinctive features of Cirebon culture are also very felt:

Cirebon Mask Dance: a typical Pantura mask dance that combines the story of Panji and has become the main icon of Cirebon culture.

The craftsmanship of glass painting and typical Cirebon batik, especially the Megamendung motif, is also taught and promoted in the Karyamulya cultural village.

The Karyamulya village/urban area in the Kesambi district of Cirebon City not only inherits the distinctive culture of Cirebon but also successfully integrates art, crafts, culinary, religiosity, and community togetherness as part of a living local identity.

Local Ritual: Ngapem

Although it is not exactly in Karyamulya, in the Kesambi District, for example in Kayuwalang Village, there is a Ngapem ritual in the month of Safar—eating apem cake as a form of warding off misfortune and gratitude, a legacy from the teachings of Sheikh Siti Jenar with a strong religious nuance. Such practices contribute to the local cultural and religious atmosphere among the community in Kesambi.

Community Culture & Mutual Cooperation

Active residents are cooperating to build a soccer field (the ‘Mata Ngaji’ field) which serves as the center of their sports and social activities. The construction project of this soccer field is expected to become a positive means for the community, especially the youth, to develop their soccer talents. Communities such as KIM Walangsungsang are also involved, providing journalistic training for residents, as well as various walking events to commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day as a medium to strengthen friendships and togetherness.
