Indonesian Language Contaminated Cirebon Language and Cirebon Variation in Pekalipan Village

Pekalipan Village

Language is one of the essential things to make all activities go well. In every country, every city, and every place is different, especially in Pekalipan village in Cirebon City. On the surface, Cirebon is located on Java island (West Java: Sundanese language), but bordered by Central Java (Javanese language). Because of Cirebon’s geography, Cirebon has own language.

Pekalipan village has a variety of languages. Variations show on phonological, morphological, and Lexical. As the speaker said, the Pekalipan village, on average, uses Cirebon and Indonesian. Especially for adults, they still often use Cirebon, but for their children, the majority use Indonesian. Cirebon language is mix with Indonesian. “Yes, for children or teenagers, now here it is already mix, yes, not all children speak Cirebon. For adults, it is the same; there are also those who Indonesia has influenced in their regional language. This is also because of its location in the middle of the city. In addition, because technology also affects it, many languages spoken by children today are difficult to understand, and also due to the fact that many immigrants from outside Cirebon speak.”

This is also due to the education that occurred in the area. According to the resource person who has been in Pekalipan village for decades. He said that “yes, today’s children at school speak Indonesian, it is rare for those who speak Cirebon, except at home, they are used to speaking Cirebon for communication”. So education also affects this, in addition to geographical location and technology.

From the analysis that I conducted on the variation of the Cirebon language that occurred. In Pekalipan village, there were several variations. But only a slight variation occurred between adult respondents aged 30 and above, and also adolescents from the age of 12 to 20.

The respondents interviewed included those in their 50s and 20s, whose results were:

From the language variations above, there is a variation in language which is a common language between ordinary language and free language (parental language). Variations occur due to differences in age, time, and other factors. In Cirebon language, or the regional language of the Cirebon area, especially in Pekalipan village itself, the more time passes, more is mixed or merged with Indonesian.

as young people, we must preserve the culture and language in our region, namely the Cirebon language, so that the Cirebon language, which is the language of the people of Cirebon, does not become extinct. Therefore, together we preserve the language and culture of Cirebon for the future.
