Cigugur Village is one of the villages in Kuningan Regency, West Java. This village with a population of 7,084 people has a lot of potential in the fields of nature, economy, and also social and culture. Located at the foot of Mount Ciremai, Cigugur Village’s agriculture, plantations, and livestock have superior quality. Because of this, Cigugur Village has potential in the economic sector that can be taken into account as well.
Introduction to Seren Taun
The people of Cigugur Village still preserve one of their cultural activities, Seren Taun. Seren Taun has a purpose as an expression of community gratitude for the harvest. Beside that, Serem Taun also hopes for a better harvest in the following year. The location of Seren Taun is centered at the Paseban Tri Panca Tunggal located on Sukamulya Street, Cigugur. Cigugur people holds the traditional Seren Taun ceremony every 22nd of Rayagung, and it lasts for approximately one week.
Activities in Seren Taun Festival of Cigugur
Village’s people witness Damar Sewu, one of the opening events of Seren Taun. Damar Sewu symbolizes the start of the festival. The literal meaning of Damar Sewu is, Damar which means Torch and Sewu which means Thousand. In accordance with its meaning, the streets around it will be installed with many torches and will be lit by a number of Cigugur youth. After the Damar Sewu procession ends, performers will present several traditional Sundanese performances. The performances are Puragabaya Gebang Dance, Kaulinan Barudak Dance, and Rampak Gendang Dance.On the following days, many other traditional Sundanese events will be held.
Regular events that are carried out during Seren Taun and have become iconic include Pesta Dadung, Seribu Kentongan, Nyiblung Competition, Helaran Budaya, Angklung Buncis, Buyung Dance, Ngajayak, Rice Pounding Procession, etc. In addition to highlighting the cultures of Cigugur Village, performers from outside the village also present several traditional art performances at Seren Taun. One of them is Angklung Kanekes performed by the Baduy people. In addition, at Seren Taun in 2024, there were several performances from the people of Riau Islands to North Sumatra.
Seren Taun Festival is not only intended for the people of Cigugur Village, but is open to anyone. People who wants to participate in celebrating the harvest party of the people. There are no restrictions on ethnicity, religion, or anything else to participate in the Seren Taun event.
