Sarah Nur Fitriyah – Let us get to know about Sutawinangun village. This village is located right at the border between the city and the regency of Cirebon. Additionally, this village borders the towns of Pekiringan, Tuk, Kedung Jaya, and Kertawinangun.
As we know, urban areas typically embrace individualistic lifestyles and offer better facilities. Meanwhile, villages usually have more family-oriented lives with fewer facilities than cities. Additionally, villages normally have unique traditions or cultures, while city dwellers focus more on productive lifestyles.
So, what about villages like Sutawinangun at the border between the city and the regency? Will life there be dominated by city habits or resemble typical village life? Here, we will discuss life in Sutawinangun village regarding language, culture, infrastructure, and social life.
Infrastructure
This discussion covers the conditions of roads, water, internet, and electricity. Overall, everything has outstanding quality. The water is clean, electricity has no disruptions, and internet connectivity is stable. Moreover, whether mobile data or WiFi, internet usage has an excellent signal and rarely experiences problems or lost connection. However, the roads in this village still need much attention.

The village certainly has main roads and alleyways. The main roads are generally excellent. However, the alleyways are in deplorable condition due to numerous potholes. Additionally, the government prioritizes continuous repairs of main roads, making the alleyways lower than the main roads. This can cause flooding in residential areas within the alleys. The government should also pay attention to the infrastructure of alleyway roads so that they can arrange everything neatly.
Language Use in Sutawinangun
This village has many boarding houses, indicating that people from other regions. dominate the community. Additionally, some homeowners are not native to Cirebon, such as people from Cimahi, Subang, Pekalongan, Indramayu, etc. Therefore, the community predominantly uses Indonesian when in public settings, but they speak their mother tongue when with their families.
Nevertheless, many non-native Cirebon residents can also speak the Cirebon language. The Cirebon language used is Javanese Cirebon. The most commonly used general words are pronouns such as “Kita,” which refers to “I”, and “Ira” which refers to “you.” The most noticeable feature is the dialect or addition of words, such as “tah” and “jeh.”
Culture in Sutawinangun
After investigation, we found that this village does not have specific cultural characteristics unique to Sutawinangun. This is because the environment is filled with buildings, with no rice fields and sea, and newcomers rather than native residents dominate the current community. The cultures that exist in this village are Muludan, Obrok, and Takbiran.
The Muludan celebration involves cooking Apem cake and sharing it with neighbors, which is done every Mawlid (Prophet Muhammad’s birthday). Then, Obrok is performed during the fasting month to wake residents by shouting the word “Sahur” followed by noisy sounds. Lastly is Takbiran, a culture residents practice the night before Eid al-Fitr. They will go around the village carrying a torch while reciting takbir. However, this culture has no longer been visible or practiced in recent years. We suggest that village administrators introduce the cultures that existed in the village in previous years so that this village does not become too quiet and does not adopt an individualistic lifestyle.
Tourism
Culinary attractions dominate tourism in Sutawinangun village. These culinary places also offer various foods, ranging from Cirebon’s specialty, a branch of Haji Apud’s Empal Gentong, Mashu, which provides Japanese food,; Calf, which is a coffee shop, Burger King, which offers Western food,; and so forth.
Sutawinangun village does not have any natural tourist attractions. This village resembles city life because several hotels, coffee shops, and other modern places exist.
The explanations above show that Sutawinangun village is more dominant with city life than typical village life. This creates opportunities to open businesses in Sutawinangun village because the location is still accessible to city people and is a passageway for villagers who want to go to the city.
