
Wayang Golek Cepak is one of the arts in Indramayu Regency. This puppet’s head doesn’t have a curved part, so it is called papak or cepak. Papak or cepak comes from Javanese which means short hair. From the shape of the head crown that this wayang got its name. Wayang cepak is thought to have been created in the 1800.
Wayang Golek Cepak Cirebon is a wayang that is full of values and has its own characteristics, one of which is that the story presented is a true story that happened in the past, such as the Walisongo story, apart from the name Cepak itself which means there are certain negative items or values. that must be cut in human life.
HISTORY OF WAYANG CEPAK
According to Ki Tanggal Gunawijaya, one of the puppeteers of the wayang cepak, it started from the Gunung Jati government era around 1475 to 1568 AD. Prince Sutajaya, a ruler of the eastern region of Cirebon at that time gave a set of Wayang Golek Cepak to Ki Prengut to be a means of spreading Islam. As the reign of Gunung Jati ended.
During the reign of Governor General Herman Willem Daendels in 1808-1811, the art of wooden wayang began enter the Priyangan area, in this region the art of wooden wayang then developed with a different form from the Cepak wayang in Cirebon and was called wayang Golek by the people.
Meanwhile, currently, Cepak wayang, apart from being used as a medium for Islamic preaching, is also used to appear at village funerals with the aim of honoring the dead.
