Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia – Located in the centre of the bustling city of Cirebon lies a hidden gem: the hermitage of Sunan Kalijaga, a revered figure in Javanese and Islamic history. Legend has it that on a fateful Friday, Sunan Kalijaga instructed his students to join him for prayers. However, some chose to play and relax instead. Enraged by their disobedience, Sunan Kalijaga uttered a curse, transforming the wayward students into monkeys. To this day, people say that their descendants inhabit the hermitage, serving as its guardians.
The caretaker says there are always 99 monkey guardians at the hermitage, divided into north and south groups. Sunan Kalijaga tasked them with guarding the site. Unlike their wild counterparts, these monkeys are tame and accustomed to human presence. Visitors can feed them and take photos with them.
Beyond the captivating monkey legend, Sunan Kalijaga’s hermitage is a treasure trove of historical and spiritual significance. The site features several intriguing structures, including an ancient well, a moss-covered stone, and a small mosque. People believe that Sunan Kalijaga himself used this place for meditation and contemplation.
The monkeys at Sunan Kalijaga’s hermitage, with their long brown tails, are ever-present, roaming the grounds and surrounding forest. Some visitors offer food to the monkeys, adding to their fascinating legend and cultural significance.
