Designed by Dutch architects FD Cuypers & Hulswit, the building reflects European Art Deco style in its design. Originally functioning in line with its name, “Tobacco,” which refers to the primary material for making cigarettes. The British American Tobacco Building was initially manage by the Indo Egyptian Cigarettes Company. In 1923, it transitioned to the British American Tobacco Company and underwent renovation in 1924. To this day, its design stands strong with great aesthetic appeal in the Old Town area of Cirebon. Surrounded by other Dutch colonial buildings.

Following World War II in 1942, the cigarette factory faced challenges. Leading to its ownership falling into the hands of the Japanese government. In 1949, the company recovered and its rename British American Tobacco Manufacture (Indonesia) Limited. The British American Tobacco Cirebon building then change ownership to PT Bentoel International Investama (BINI). And was solely use for cigarette production until May 2010. When all production activities cease and were relocating to Malang, East Java. Previously, this cigarette factory was the largest in Indonesia.

As for the precise location of the BAT Building, it is situate on Jl. Pasuketan, Lemahwungkuk, Lemahwungkuk District, Cirebon City, West Java. This location was frequently traverse by the Dutch or even served as a center for them. Its historical significance persists from then until now. Evident in films set in the Cirebon area depicting battles between Dutch and Allied forces against Indonesian military troops. One such film is “Oeroeg,” directed by Hans Hylkema and released in 1993, portraying the Indonesian independence war era. This demonstrates that BAT is not just an old building but an iconic historical symbol in Cirebon.
